Nintendo loss measured at £395 million, poor Wii sales

Nintendo have had a tough 2011, facing stiff competition from the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. More and more people are shifting to high definition televisions which is the strength of the Microsoft and Sony consoles.

Other costs for Nintendo include the development and launch of the 3DS hand held console, and valuation losses on their foreign currency holdings, due to the strong yen.

They posted losses of ¥48.35 billion (approximately £395 million) in the nine months which ended December 31st. This time the year previous they made a very healthy profit of around £400 million.

Nintendo are hedging their bets on the success of the upcoming Wii U console which is being pushed hard by the company as they prepare for launch. No exact dates have been announced yet, but latest reports indicate the second half of 2012.

It will be there first console to product 1080p high definition graphics, which will put them on a level playing field with the other consoles. The main feature of the controller is its built-in touchscreen, which either supplements or replicates the game displayed on the television screen. The cost of the console has not been confirmed for the United Kingdom market yet, but it won't be cheap.
