Modern Warfare 3 beats Avatar movie for $1bn sales record

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has broken all records, to reach a sales income of $1 billion in just 16 days.

Avatar was a monster hit for James Cameron, grossing $1 billion in just 17 days after release. No one would have expected that a computer game would trumph a ground breaking 3D movie, but it has.

COD MW3 has earned the title of ‘fastest selling entertainment product of all time', beating Avatar by grossing $1 billion, a day quicker. The last Harry Potter film has also been beaten, as it took 17 days to reach the same figure in August this year.

Activision Blizzard are laughing all the way to the bank, they announced that Modern Warfare 3 generated $400 million in sales within 24 hours of release.

Modern Warfare 3: a license to print money

Bobby Kotick, the CEO of the company said “Call of Duty as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture. Call of Duty is now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and the National Football League that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release.”

Black Ops, the previous title, was a record seller too, but it took two months to reach the $1 billion mark.

Modern Warfare 3 might be a huge seller for the company, but critical and public reviews have been mixed with many people saying that the game has done nothing to innovate or push forward, relying simply on the same formula as before.

  1. Good, Some good parts… yeah its the same with a few minor changes

To be honest.. MW has not changed since the first. Not in a way thats “innovative” at least.

With x3 success stories… why should they really innovate? Sales keep getting better and better…. no reason to
