Situation Report: Modern Warfare 3 Vs Battlefield 3

In the build-up to any battle, both sides brandish massive modern weaponry. With thousands of soldiers marching through the street, backed up by tanks and an air display, it's not easy to see that one side is packing a bigger punch. KitGuru embeds with the troops of GAME company to bring you a report from the front lines. The result is scary.

You better close your eyes. You better bow your head. Here comes the Rick O'Shea.

At Gamescom 2011, a continuous march of more than 275,000 game enthusiasts filed through halls full of the biggest, baddest, best marketing efforts KitGuru has seen in a long time. While it was hard to pick one stand above all others, the fact that the Battlefield 3 stand had a massive fighter jet, centre stage, was a significant draw.

Stunning display and a great game, but somehow lacking the afterburner necessary to pull ahead of MW3

With that in mind, imagine our surprise when we snuck a camera into GAME so we could photograph the high-street giant's charts.

In case it's not immediately clear, MW3 is number one (top left) and Battlefield 3 is not even on the chart. Single copy, bottom right. Not satisfied, GAME is also running a big trade-in promo to push MW3 sales even higher.

.
The gap between MW3 and BF3 on this chart is big. But then consider that this is the PC games chart and you see how significant it is. Game play on the PC is probably MW3's weakest suit. Certainly, this is the smallest contributor to overall sales. MW3 is console-led. Blimey.

Combining KitGuru's charming smile and winning patter, we engaged with one of the retail experts behind the till.

“You can't touch Call of Duty”, she informed us. “Nothing else even comes close”.

KitGuru says: So, there you have it, no matter how amazing Battlefield 3 is as a game, in the battle for the hearts and minds of the GAME public, it's not even in the same league. Time to de-widen our eyes and pick our jaws off the floor. MW3 owns the GAME charts.

  1. Not even in the same league? Oh please. Then why the hell is its User score on Matacritic pathetic?

All these game review sites have lost touch with what the public thinks is a good game. Do your jobs as journalists and go on the forums.

These are just a small selection.

Quality, not quantity. When will people learn the difference?

  2. HAHAHAHA those user reviews mean nothing. I guarantee many of those are faked. On opening day I read tons of metacritic reviews of people saying they had no expectations for the game, it still disappointed, and they gave it a 0.
    1. Who gets a game at the midnight release, or day one, that they DONT EVEN WANT. Haha only an idiot, or someone who didn’t and just wants to knock COD
    2. Even if the game was truly just more of the same, its rating, fairly rated, would be like a 5. It’d still be good just repetitious, that does not deserve a 0. Those rating sites that have MW3’s user rating at anywhere between a 1-2.5 are not receiving honest reviews of the game

  3. Save yourself the time and money and go out and buy a real gun because the truth is no FPS comes anywhere near what it’s like to shoot a real gun. Not to mention at the end of the day you’d actually have something to show for it, instead of a bunch of useless digital garbage.

  4. Review sites don’t work with call of duty any more. At this point, gaming sites give COD no less than an 8/10 just for being COD, why? Because giving cod a low score just wouldn’t go over well with the gaming community, and if a site gave cod a low score, they could anger a lot of fanboys and lose a lot of readers. Its sad, but thats how it works nowadays.

  5. this pleases me greatly. I’m a relatively recent BF fan, (veteran 3) I got into it with bad Company 2 and immediately fell in love with the style. But I also love the fact that the community isn’t full of 12 year olds pretending to be Osama Bin Laden, Battlefield isn’t mainstream, and I love that fact.
if battlefield 3 outsold COD then that would mean cod boys in battlefield >:O
so on that basis, long live call of duty.

  6. I’m disappointed by the fact that gamers at large preffered a inferior (game play and graphical wise). But regardless i don’t need reviews or the acceptance of consumers at large to decide which game is better, though it would have been nice to have the majority on my side.

  7. At the end of the day the general public will vote with their hard earned cash.

Whilst there will be those that are generally clueless and take what the so called high street games specialists say to be gospel the main sales of both these games will come from the true gaming fans.

Some will stick with what they like, some will buy both, maybe some will buy say MW3 and then decide that they want BF3 instead. A lot of people try and compare the two games as they are in the same genre but they both promote a different style of game play.

Both games are played more online rather than in single player form so surely the online playing charts show which is more popular.

Like previously stated most user reviews can be faked, fan boys of each game will always defend what they consider to be the best and slate the other which unfortunately includes adding negative reviews. To get a true understanding of which is the best game buy both and see which suits ones style of play.
