Sony renames PlayStation Network to Sony Entertainment Network

In efforts to unify its online services, Sony is about to change the name of its now 4 year running “PlayStation Network” (PSN) to the “Sony Entertainment Network” (SEN). SEN which was previously named Qriocity represents all of Sony's online streaming services including games, video, music and eBooks and up until now has been available to varied extents around the world on a range of Sony's devices including some of its BRAVIA TV's and of course the PS3.

The move to turn the PSN into SEN is scheduled to take place at some stage today and will occur as a purely aesthetic change at this time, meaning there will be no service disruptions during the transition apart from a software update becoming available for both the PS3 and PS Vita that rolls in the rebranding and renames PSN accounts to SEN accounts. At the time of the update, users will also need to agree to new policies in order to continue using their account. The updated agreements give explanation to the location-based services for the PS Vita and list changes to parental controls for sub-master accounts.

As a result of merging all of Sony's online services together in this re-branding move, the company has said it will make for an easier means as a PSN account holder to access other non-game services such as Music Unlimited, Video Store and PlayMemories Online (previously called Personal Space) using a variety of network-connected devices.

This transition is based on Sony’s goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering. As a series of these activities Sony started last September, PlayStation Network will be aligned with “Sony Entertainment Network.” This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account“.

KitGuru says: Perhaps also a much welcomed move due to last year's hacking frenzy tarnishing the PSN branding.
