Sony recall 1.6 million Bravia TV’s due to fire risk

Sony Corp have announced a huge recall on 1.6 million Bravia flat panel television sets due to potential problems which may cause them to melt, or even catch fire.

Sony investigated their televisions after a problem in September in which a customer noticed some smoke, and a small fire. Yuki Shima, a spokeswoman for Sony confirmed this in a statement. A total of eleven incidents have been reported in Japan since 2008. No injuries have been reported yet.

The fault is based around the backlighting system which can overheat and even melt the top of the TV set. This is the second recall in a month for Sony. They have also had to issue a replacement policy for up to 2 million handset batteries due to overheating problems.

The Bravia televisions are 40 inch screens which have been sold in Europe, America, China and the Middle East and will be repaired if faulty parts are found. Sony will send out a repair crew, according to Shima.

Kitguru says: So far there have been no reports of overheating outside Japan, but the concern has been flagged to make customers aware of potential problems down the line.
