Kojima will redefine the Strand genre with Death Stranding 2

Leading up to the release of 2019’s Death Stranding, the game’s creator Hideo Kojima spoke on the title and its genre, describing it as a ‘Strand-type’ game. While we did not know what this meant at the time, the release of Death Stranding brought with it some clarity. That said, according to the auteur, Death Stranding 2 will once again redefine what ‘Strand’ means.

In an interview conducted by Japanese publication ‘Music Natalie’ (and translated by Kotaku), Kojima spoke on his previous revelation that the entire story of Death Stranding 2 was rewritten following the outbreak of the COVID Pandemic, saying:

“At the beginning, there was the theme of ‘connecting,’ and after that, I made a lot of notes about character settings, game ideas, and so on. Like how to connect it. I put it together while maintaining a balance…But I had to rewrite everything because of corona.”

Kojima continued, “In Death Stranding, it was justice to connect, but with the corona crisis, pseudo-connections such as remotes have come to be emphasized. On the other hand, I felt that such pseudo-connections alone would not lead to fulfilling human lives. After all, humans need to go out into the outside world and move.”

As with the first game, we probably won’t know exactly what Kojima means by all this until the game itself actually releases. Regardless, it is exciting to see the creator not resting on his laurels and taking the opportunity afforded by this sequel to once again redefine what it means to play a Strand game.
