Sony announce three extra Cyber shot cameras

Sony have just announced three new Cyber shot cameras for the mainstream audience. The DSC-WX50, DSC-WX70 and DSC-TX200V are all scheduled for release in March, a couple of months after the W610, W620 and W650 which were announced at CES a few weeks ago.

The WX 50 and WX 70 both feature a Carl Zeiss zoom lens with a 25-125mm range (f2.6-6.3). They are equipped with a 16 megapixel sensor and can capture video at 60 frames per second up to 1080i. Sony have included optical image stabilisation as well for low light conditions. The Wx70 has a larger 3 inch screen rated at 921k dots. The WX50 screen is 2.7 inch with 460k dot resolution. The WX50 is priced at $200, and the WX70 is $30 more for the larger, higher quality screen.

The DSC Tx200W is the most interesting model they are announcing however as it features a glass front plate. The sensor is rated to 18 Megapixel with a range of 26-130mm. It has Carl Zeiss optics with the same 1080i 60 fps movie capture capabilities with GPS and optical stabilisation. This model gets the largest screen, a 3.3 inch touchscreen with OLED technology. It is also sealed against water and dust, so is more useful in demanding situations. Sony claim it can focus in 0.1 seconds in good light and 0.2 seconds in dim light. The retail price is much higher, at $500.

Kitguru says: We also aren't sure that the race for ‘more megapixels' makes much sense with smaller sensors, as the noise can also increase. Canon learned this the hard way with their Powershot G11

  1. bigger numbers always attract people. technology companies have always wanted ‘bigger’ numbers for PR releases. it works too, which is sad.
