EVGA’s Dual-Socket LGA 2011 SR-X is almost ready

For a bit there we were beginning to wonder if EVGA was still planning to bring its almighty SR-X Dual-Socket LGA 2011 motherboard to market. It's been a little while since we've heard anything about it, but thanks to a new image of the board thrown up on Twitpic from EVGA themselves we can confirm it's still coming, and progress has certainly been made!

While there is still no definative release date set for the SR-X as yet, it is assumed that with the addition of all its heatsinks in this photo that the board is nearing its final stages of completion. There are four heatsinks in all which include coverage over the VRM areas and chipsets.

For dual-chip configurations a couple of Sandy Bridge-EP (xeon) CPUs are the order of the day, while it is also possible to throw a Sandy Bridge-E processor onboard for single-chip operation. Other features of the board that we can ascertain at this time is its 12 DDR3 slots providing support for up to 96GB of RAM, seven PCI-E 3.0 x16 slots with both SLI and CrossfireX support on tap, a series of PCIe disabling switches and voltage read points and debugging LED.

There are two power connectors resident for each CPU in the form of an 8-pin and 6-pin, while the board storage setup gives six SATA and four SAS ports, along with a couple eSATA ports on the rear I/O. Rounding out the remaining features we know of, it's got dual Gigabit ethernet, 7.1 channel audio, integrated Bluetooth, six USB 3.0 connectors (four on the rear I/O and two via a header) along with EVGA's EVBot support.

As mentioned, we're still waiting to hear of a date EVGA is planning to launch the SR-X or at what (undoubtedly scary) price point. It's quite possible EVGA is saving this one for CeBIT, running from the 6th until the 10th of March.
