LG has just officially announced its latest Android smartphone, the Optimus Vu. Right from the start you can tell the Vu is not your usual Android smartphone with its 5 inch, 4:3 aspect ratio display. This puts it in the “phablet” group, alongside Samsung's Galaxy Note only with a more bizarre format.
The 5 inch IPS display has a resolution of 1024×768, making it one of the first, if not the first 4:3 aspect ratio Android device. While the display may seem like a bit of an odd choice LG has done this as it “makes viewing documents, books, internet and multimedia contents easier and more comfortable.”
LG's latest offering also has a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 1 GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. As standard with most new phones released these days the Vu has a 8 MP rear camera and a 1.3 MP front facing camera.
It will have a 2080 mAh battery and will come in at just 8.5 mm thin. Although it is a pretty thick phone in another dimension, being just over 9.0 cm wide. This will surely make one handed typing near impossible.
The phone will be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread at launch and will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the next few months. The Optimus Vu will launch in Korea next month but pricing and global availability information has not yet been revealed.
