It won't come as much of a shock, but Apple may find it hard keeping up with demand when they release the upcoming iPad 3. The demand for new Apple tablets is always extraordinary, but they face additional problems, due to display panel shortages.
Digitimes have sourced information in the local channel which hints at problems in the production chain.
“Apple may not unable to ramp up the supply of its next-generation iPads (iPad 3), which are expected to be launched at a company event on March 7, due to insufficient supply of high resolution displays, according to industry sources in the supply chain.
Although Apple has chosen Sharp to replace Chimei Innolux (CMI) as one of its three suppliers for the high resolution (QXGA) panels – in addition to LG Display and Samsung Electronics, the whole supply chain has failed to substantially ramp up the supply of QXGA panels, the sources revealed”
Sharp initially were chosen to make the panels for Apple, but they lost the contract when they failed to meet Apple standards for quality. According to the latest reports however it would appear they are back in the chain as a supplier for the iPad 3 with LG and Samsung also being linked with development of panels.
Apple are planning to announce the iPad 3 on March 7th in San Francisco, but it is expected that it will be a couple more weeks before stock hits the retail channel. We can expect the usual media frenzy with crowds of people camping out at retail stores to get their hands on one of the new tablet computers.
Kitguru says: While Apple have apparently upgrading the processing power inside the computer, the main talking point is the new 2048×1538 resolution screen which should push the quality of a tablet screen to a whole new level.
