Sony announces Xperia sola smartphone

Sony has just announced its latest smartphone to follow the new Sony Xperia styling that has already been seen in the Xperia S, the Xpera sola. The NFC equipped Android smartphone will come bundled with two Xperia SmartTags. These can be configured to do things on the phone, such as turning on the alarm and switching to silent mode, all in one swipe of the phone over the tag.

Sony's latest Xperia smartphone, complete with "floating touch" navigation

The 3.7 inch Reality Display will have a 854×480 resolution and is destined to be powered by a 1 GHz STE U8500 dual-core processor. It will be 9.9mm thick, have a 1320 mAh battery, plus 8 GB of internal storage and a MicroSD slot. The 5 MP camera will be able to take pictures within a second from sleep mode with a single press of the fast capture button.

One of the most impressive features it what Sony is calling “floating touch” navigation. This means you can browse the web by hovering your finger above the screen, without touching the screen at all. A single tap will then load the desired link.

“Xperia sola comes with the power of Sony and a sense of magic with floating touch, giving consumers a fun new way to browse the web and latest technology to show off,” said Calum MacDougall, Head of Xperia Marketing for Sony Mobile Communications.

The quad-band 3G phone will launch with Android 2.3 and will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich sometime this summer. The sola will be available in black, white or red and should be available sometime during the second quarter.

Kitguru says: Another impressive Android Xperia smartphone from the folks at Sony.
