Motorola Mobility are facing two investigations by the European Union's competition watchdog. They claim that the company, which is being bought by Google could be unfairly restricting competitors from accessing essential patents.
The formal investigations have been announced after Microsoft and Apple complained to the European Commission that Motorola Mobility are using injunctions against products such as the iPhone, iPad and Xbox so they can gain ‘an edge' in the market for similar products.
EU Law states that companies who hold patents for technologies ‘that are essential for industry standards' have to make them available to rivals.
Kitguru says: The Google takeover of Motorola Mobility is set to enhance and strengthen their portfolio of patent ownership for future battles.
