Is the Apple iPad 3 too small for you? Then Toshiba may have the answer if you want a supersized tablet – in the shape of the Excite 13.
The Excite 13 is a huge unit which may bring portability into question, however they feel there is a market for this 13 inch tablet. There is no doubt that the larger screen will be better for watching high definition videos, however a spokesman spoke to Wired and said it would be ideal for budding chefs too. Jared Leavitt told Wired “The larger size makes it an ideal kitchen tablet. You can watch how-to videos while you’re cooking, or look up recipes.”
Toshiba will be shipping the tablet complete with a stand, which would make it ideal for ‘stationary' use in the house. It will run on Google's Android 4.0 operating system. It will weigh 2.2 pounds and measure 0.4 inches thick.
It is a daring move for Toshiba, as larger tablets have yet to gain any traction in the market dominated by the 9.7 inch Apple iPad. The Kindle Fire has also sold well, but it is a 7 inch tablet with a tight price point and maximum portability.
Do we really want a 13 inch tablet, which will clearly cross over directly with the smaller laptop sector. While the screen may be ideal for watching media content, the resolution is lower than the iPad 3 – 1600×900 against 2048×1536. It is powered by the Tegra 3 processor from Nvidia and has 1 GB of ram installed with a 5 Megapixel rear facing camera and four rear mounted speakers.
Toshiba are including a micro USB port and a micro HDMI port for direction connection to a high definition television set. They also include an SD card slot. All of these are more than the iPad 3 offers out of the box.
The price hasn't been announced for the UK market, but the 32GB model will cost $650 and the 64GB model $750, due for release in June. Toshiba have plans to release an Excite 7 and an Excite 10 later, 7 inch and 10 inches respectively.
Kitguru says: Do you want a 13 inch tablet?
This tab is deffinately desireable and think toshiba have stumbled apon a very niche market which I can see many other manufacturers soon jumping on this 13″ bandwagon….10″ is fine but sometimes it just feels like a big oversized phone 13″ is just gonna be perfect for most homes. Deffinately for my home anyway.
