Apple won’t produce laptop/tablet hybrid

Some companies have been selling tablet/laptop hybrids in the last year, but Apple said they have no plans to release such a computer.

Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke out during the second quarter earnings call this week and dismissed the concept as a ‘compromise' for the end user.

He said “Anything can be forced to converge, but the problem is that products are about tradeoffs, and you begin to make tradeoffs to the point where what you have left doesn't please anyone. You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those things are probably not going be pleasing to the user.”

Apple sold almost 47 million iOS based devices in their second fiscal quarter, compared against 4 million Macintosh computers, slightly less than predicted by Wall Street analysts. These two platforms are running different operating systems, but with the upcoming release of Mountain Lion for the Macintosh there will be more iOS features ported over.

Windows 8 is said to arrive after Mountain Lion and will introduce touch screen features. Tim Cook isn't so sure that touch screen panels for a computer system are a good idea. He said “We've done tons of user testing on this, and it turns out it doesn't work, Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical.” Can someone tell Microsoft?

Kitgury says: Cook talks sense.
