Samsung and Apple claim 99% of profit in mobile sector

Horace Dediu from Asymco has released data on operating profits from the top eight mobile phone vendors in Q1 of 2012. The report highlights that Apple and Samsung now hold 99% of the overall profits. Apple claim 73% of this 99%.

The Apple share has dropped from 75% in the previous quarter however Samsung boosted their share from 16% to 26% which hit the other companies hard. HTC claimed 1% of the total industry profits.

Other companies such as LG, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Research In Motion and Nokia failed to turn a profit from the mobile phone sector.

Profits taken by the top eight players has risen from $5.3 billion to $14.4 billion. Apple and Samsung dominance means they are getting the lion's share of this growing market.
