Overwatch 2 launches to overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam

In a surprise announcement this summer, Blizzard revealed plans to bring some of its games to Valve's Steam platform for the very first time, starting with Overwatch 2. As of yesterday, Overwatch 2 is available on Steam, just in time for the new Invasion content update. However, the user reviews are not exactly kind.

While Battle.net does not have a user review function, with players instead being directed to official forums to share feedback, Steam has user reviews displayed right on the store page, giving customers a quick glance at how people generally feel about certain titles. Games are assigned an overall score based on the average of positive versus negative reviews and this score is updated over time to reflect the ongoing state of the game.

Overwatch 2 is not getting the best reception on Steam. Currently, the game has an “Overwhelmingly Negative” overall score based on just under 40,000 user reviews. Some of the most popular reviews are memes, arguing that Overwatch porn is better produced. Others are a bit more thoughtful, offering more meaningful points to explain their negative review.

Of course, as a free game, it is easy for a lot of users to post reviews. Typically, you would need to purchase a game to add a review to the store page, but with Overwatch 2 being free, all you need to do is hit the ‘add to library' button. Many of the reviews are from accounts with less than an hour of playtime, but that doesn't mean those users didn't sink hours into the Battle.net version of the game.

After the backlash from the cancellation of the game's full PvE mode with new skill trees for heroes, I can't say we didn't see this outcome coming and Blizzard probably should have expected it too.

KitGuru Says: While I question the legitimacy of some of these reviews, I do think there are many legitimate reasons to criticise the state of Overwatch and the handling of Overwatch 2 overall. The whole thing has been a mess, from the confusing announcement in 2019, to the new in-game store, to the 5v5 gameplay and content rollout.
