Samsung Galaxy S Value Pack offers Android 4.0-esque features

Samsung Galaxy S users were left in the dark earlier this year after they were told by Samsung that they would not be getting an official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. But thanks to consumer power, Samsung agreed to offer their Galaxy S a “Value Pack” that would bring Android 4.0 features to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It looks as if this update to now rolling out to users in its native Korea.

Korean Samsung Galaxy S owners should now being getting their Value Pack update

Some of the new features include:

  • Face unlock with blink detection – to stop the phone being fooled by a photo of a person
  • Ability to take photos while recording video
  • A new photo editor
  • Font size adjustments in some applications
  • Improvements to how folders work and the launcher
  • Smart Receipt installation icon

While it is already available to those in Korea it is unclear when (or even if) the Value Pack will make its way to Europe and the USA.

Kitguru says: Even though Samsung's Nexus S smartphone with near identical hardware got an Android 4.0 update, it is good to see Samsung keeping their customer base satisfied.

  1. Am I missing something here? My Galaxy does not have a front camera, how does it do face recognition?

  2. This is for the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 and its variants, chances are you have a different Galaxy phone

  3. The Samsung addition of blink detection to the face unlock feature in Android ICS is an interesting way to address a common challenge of that feature – photo rejection.

Sensible Vision – (my employer and) the leading provider of face recognition solutions for the PC – has taken a different approach. By simultaneously touching a “secret shape” in addition to showing your face, FastAccess Anywhere for Android and iOS achieves:

    • Security greater than that of a highly complex password—without the need to actually type a password on a small keyboard
    • Extremely quick access to protected data – this is critical to the long term use of any technology. (On the other hand, requiring video capture, such as with the Samsung blinking approach, may slow down the login process.)
    • Complete immunity to access by both photos and videos (photos can’t blink, but videos certainly can).

FastAccess Anywhere also provides convenience by allowing the user to target security to only where it’s really needed – the login to secure apps and websites and the launch of apps that the user deems to be sensitive. No need to go through security just to check the weather or play a game.
