Canon to release EOS M 18MP mirrorless camera in October

Canon are going to release their new mirrorless EOS M camera in October. The 18 megapixel compact camera will have touchscreen control and be designed to fit easily in a pocket for maximum portability.

The new camera features an APS-C CMOS sensor with an ISO range between 100-12,800. It will offer an expandable ISO mode to 25,600 in H mode. 1080p video recording is also offers.

Inside, the EOS0M uses the Digi 5 Image processor found in the Canon DSLR range, with a hybrid CMOS autofocus system with 31 AF points, multi point AF and face detection.

The camera is built around magnesium and stainless steel offering a ‘dual tone' look as seen in the images above and below.

There will be a stepping motor system in the new pair of lenses, the EF-M 22mm F2 and the EF-M 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS. Canon claim almost silent AF. The camera adopts a 3 inch Clear View 1.04M dot LCD touchscreen, with multitouch suppotr for swipe navigation and pinch zooming. Canon have incorported an ‘anti smudge' coating to help reduce the impact of distracting fingerprints.

Current EF and EF-S lens will work with the EOS M, with the optional mount adapter.

Pricing in the UK has not yet been announced, but they are claiming a $799.99 US price point, which will include the 22mm f/2 STM kit lens. The price looks set to be around £650, if our conversion (+ extra) figures are correct. A white version is also going to be offered online.

The EF-M 18-55m f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens will be priced at $299.99, so we could expect a price point around £230.
