The Lava Xolo X900 will soon be the first smartphone to be powered by an Intel Atom processor and is due to go on sale next Monday in India.
The handset itself will have 4 inch, 1024 by 600 resolution display that results in an near-retina class display at 295 PPI. The Intel Atom Z2460 SoC incorporates a 1.6 GHz single core processor with Hyper-Threading, a PowerVR SGX540 GPU clocked at 400 MHz and 1 GB of dual channel LPDDR2 memory. Also included is 16 GB of internal storage and NFC capabilities.
One of the biggest allures about Intel's Medfield platform is the burst shot camera mode that can take up to 10 images a second. There is a 8 MP rear camera capable of 1080p video recording and a 1.3 MP webcam.
Sadly, the Xolo X900 will ship with Android 2.3 Gingerbread but Lava is promising that a Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OTA update is on its way. Owners will also notice a much more sparse Google Play Store compared to other devices as many applications have not been updated for use on Intel's x86 hardware.
Intel's first shipping smartphone will go on sale on the 23rd of April and is set to cost 22,000 INR, which is roughly $425 USD.
KitGuru says: On the surface all may seem well but we are yet to see the true performance and power drain of Intel's Medfield platform.
There must be a reason why Intel is launching such a handset in an obscure market and not making any noise about it. The price is not aggressive and the platform is relatively unknown in the Android space. Seems like a beta-test market to see how things pan out. I doubt if they would sell many thousands of units at such prices and not really giving neat features for mid-end Android handset market. Just one look at Xperia S in similar price point and you would jump to Sony in a heartbeat!. ICS Exmor Lens, Bravia screen and Sony built quality. How can this GS II clone-alike compare ???. Oh, is that why ?.
