Transcend goes under £12 for 32GB SD

We all know that the memory market is going through a harsh evolutionary phase. As processes shrink and improve – so the overall capacity of the world's foundries is increasing – with a corresponding drop in price.

Regular KitGuru readers will know that Kingston as dropped the price of a 120GB HyperX 3K drive to just £64.99 on Scan. But what about camera/device memory?

Our recent story on SanDisk's 32GB Compact Flash media at £255 from the Dixons Stores (Currys/PC World etc) caused quite a stir. That SanDisk wanted over £540 for the 64GB variant seemed, frankly, to be taking the p*ss.

The same store had a Canon Digital SLR with 18-55 and 70-300 lenses, as a complete package, for less. Anyone can see that a memory stick can't cost more than a camera and two lenses – it's just not logical.

So that brings us to Transcend's latest deal.

Right now, most UK stores are offering SD memory at around the ‘£1 per 1GB' mark – give or take.

Drop that to 25 pence a gigabyte and you're looking at some seriously good value.

KitGuru says: The scary part is that we're looking at gigabytes for pounds. In the next 10 years, we'll probably be looking at terabytes for the same kind of money. Anyone care to predict the launch date for a petabyte memory stick?
