HTC halts operations in Brazil, poor sales to blame

Recent reports have revealed that HTC is cancelling its planned One Series launch in the Brazilian market and ending all phone sales in the nation, effectively immediately. As such, dozens of employees have already been released while a small presence will remain to offer support for current devices.

“After careful analysis of our lines of business, HTC is closing our office in Brazil. We will continue after-sales support for our products so this should not result in a change in service for current customers. This decision does not have an impact on HTC's business outside of Brazil.”

HTC's One series will not be launched in Brazil, neither will any other HTC phone in the foreseeable future.

HTC smartphones have failed to gain traction in Brazil for some time now; being outpaced significantly by Samsung, Nokia, Apple and others. StatCounter indicates that HTC has just a 0.11% marketshare in the nation. It may not be the end of Brazil for HTC however. Nearly 10 million smartphones were sold there last year and they are expected to become the fourth largest smartphone market by 2016.
