Our review of HTC's One X went live earlier in the week and we found it to be a very nice phone but was lacking in a few areas. HTC is hoping to remedy this and in the process close the gap between their own flagship and Samsung's Galaxy S III with a upcoming firmware update.
A test version of the firmware has been leaked to a ROM developer, XDA user Football, and they have baked up a ROM based on the firmware. The new update will be 2.05.401.2, a noticeable update (in terms of numbers at worst) over the current 1.29.401.11. The Android version will also be updated to Android 4.0.4, which will by default include some stability improvements. Updated kernels, radios and software drivers are also bundled in.
Early adopters of the aforementioned ROM have been impressed. Users are reporting a better web browsing experience, tweaked auto brightness settings, a smoother user interface and faster unlock speeds. Gaming performance appears to have been improved, along with battery life whilst gaming. It is not clear yet if overall battery life has been improved.
There is no official word on when the update will be released to unlocked devices but hopefully it should be within the next fortnight.
KitGuru says: We mentioned in our review that HTC appear dedicated to software updates, it should now read that they are indeed dedicated to software updates.
Any word on the release date yet ??
