Yesterday Microsoft showcased their new tablet which runs on the upcoming Windows 8 operating system. They are diverting resources to mount a viable attack on the Apple and Google machines. Ballmer said the device would offer “Windows without compromise”.
The new Microsoft Surface tablet has a built in stand and keyboard cover. Microsoft have yet to announce a price or time of availability which may indicate that they are still some time away from public release.
Microsoft will be releasing two versions of the tablet, supporting both ARM and Intel processors. The RT version for ARM will be available in 32GB and 64GB versions and the Windows 8 Pro will have 64GB and 128GB versions.
The tablets will measure 9.3mm thick (ARM) and 13.5mm thick (Intel) and feature two full size USB ports. Both will have a 10.6 inch screen, which is slightly larger than the Apple iPad.
The cover of each device will act as a full keyboard, measuring 3mm thick. It attaches with a magnetic edge similar to the iPad smart cover. CNET have some additional pictures on the product. Microsoft will be releasing two versions of the cover – thin and thick. Both have a dual camera system incorporated.
The Surface tablets work with a stylus, attaching to the tablet with a magnet – supplied with the professional version.
Ballmer is proud of the new tablet and said “We control it all, we design it all, we manufacture it all ourselves.” He strengthened his claim by discussing their hardware history, including the mouse, Xbox and Kinetic designs.
It will be interesting to see how much market share it can claim when it is released. Microsoft are still struggling in the smartphone market, even with Nokia behind them.
Kitguru says: The new tablet on your shortlist or are they just too late to market?
