There are two big things Android fans will be looking forward to at Google I/O later this week. The first being the unveiling of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Not much is known about the latest version of Android but we're expecting not a lot more than minor tweaks. Secondly, Google is expected to use the event to launch a sub-$200 tablet. This has been all but confirmed with the leak of a training document.
Gizmodo Australia has managed to get their eyes on a training document relating to what will be known as the Nexus 7. The budget tablet will offer very impressive specifications for the price. The tablet will be manufactured by ASUS and have a 7 inch 1280 x 800 resolution IPS display. The processor will be of the Tegra 3 kind, clocked at 1.3 GHz which is essentially a lower-clocked version of the one in the Transformer Pad Infinity. It will have a full gigabyte of RAM and either 8 or 16 GB of storage (with no mention of a MicroSD slot). The Nexus tablet will have a 1.2 MP front-facing camera and interestingly, it will also pack in NFC.
The document claims that battery life will be in the region of nine hours. As is expected of Nexus devices, it will launch with soon-to-be-unveiled Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and will get its software updates promptly and directly from Google.
The 8 GB model will cost $199 USD and if you wish to double the storage it will cost you another $50. It is set to land on Australian shores in July, presumably alongside other key markets such as the United Kingdom and the United States.
KitGuru says: I'll be picking one of these up, no doubt about that.
