While Android is most commonly attributed to smartphones and tablets, it often pops up in other devices. One of these devices will be the entertainment system in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner passenger jets. Two models will be available to outfitters, the the Panasonic eX3 and the Thales TopSeries Avant. Details for the Thales model were unveiled alongside a demonstration at the Farnborough International Airshow recently.
The TopSeries Avant model will have 10″ and 17″ versions, although there is no word on display type or resolution. In terms of performance they will have a dual core ARM processor, 1 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Meanwhile the central server will have 32 cores either in the form of an Intel Xeon or AMD Opteron processor, 128 GB of RAM and 4 TB of storage. The plane itself will also support users to access Wi-Fi and 3G HSPA+, but at what cost is yet to be seen.
British Airways has already signed on the dotted line for the TopSeries entertainment system and will include it in its own 787 Dreamliners.
KitGuru says: Since only 14 out of 859 orders for Boeing's latest jet have been delivered to airlines around the world, frequent fliers could be waiting a while to see this in action.
