Android 4.0 is now on 10.9% of Android devices

The latest data on how many devices running each version of Google's Android mobile operating system has just been released, and depending on how you look at it it can be perceived as both good and bad.

Starting with the good news, 10.9% of devices are now running the latest available version, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. This has risen from 7.1% last month. Considering there are millions of Android devices out there this is rather impressive – unless you realise that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was first announced in October last year.

Now for the bad news; nearly one in four (22.7%) of Android devices are running Android 2.2 Froyo or older. That means nearly a quarter of Android devices are still running a version that is over two years old. Ouch.

Hopefully the launch of the Platform Development Kit (PDK) alongside Android 4.1 Jelly Bean last week will result in fewer devices that are terribly out of date in the future.
