Kickstarter to launch in UK

Fan funding website Kickstarter is set to debut in the UK soon, according to the website's official Twitter feed. While so far the British have only been able to send dollars overseas to back American based projects, in the near future ones based on the isle will be able to seek their own crowd of funders.

Some have been very pleased with this news, others have suggested that Europe already has other services encroaching on the crowd funding market. Verkami is one of the more popular Spanish options and there are many others that compete directly with Kickstarter, both abroad and at its home in the US. Crowdfunding.co.uk is already available here, while overseas there's Indiegogo, the game dedicated Gambitious and GameLab. The list goes and will likely continue to grow for some time.

That said, Kickstarter has received a lot of promotion. The likes of Double Fine Productions and the Pebble E-Paper watch brought a lot of exposure to the platform, cementing the name in the minds of people who would likely not have heard of it otherwise.

Launched in 2009, Kickstarter has to date funded over 20,000 projects, ranging in budget from a few hundred to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Often with the better projects, the initial goals are vastly exceeded, leading to extra perks for those that donated larger ammounts, as well as a better end product.

KitGuru Says: It's good to see Kickstarer giving us limey's some love, but will it beat out our own, home grown crowd funding sites?
