Immortals Fenyx Rising’s cancelled sequel was inspired by Elden Ring and Wind Waker

Last month we reported that Ubisoft had scrapped plans for a sequel to 2020’s open-world action-adventure title Immortals: Fenyx Rising. While details were scarce at the time, a new report has revealed many of the core design principles behind the now-cancelled project – including the fact that it was to be inspired by both Elden Ring and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

As reported by Axios, in speaking to sources familiar with the project, Immortals 2 (known as Project Oxygen) was said to be an ambitious game which combined a number of traits from both Elden Ring and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The first game was clearly inspired by Breath of Wild, while also offering their own twist on the formula with skill trees, a customisable character, meta humour and more.

The sequel was intended to be much grander in scope when compared to the first title, and was given additional development time because of it. While we saw nothing from the project, the game had supposedly been far enough along to create “several playable hours” worth of content. Ultimately Ubisoft hire-ups decided to cancel the project – presumably to focus more on Ubisoft Quebec’s other in-development title ‘Assassin’s Creed Code Red’.

While we still know little about the sequel, Immortals 2 was said to be a “vast game set across a fictionalized version of the Polynesian archipelago”. Players would gain elemental powers, shape shift, and travel between a bunch of different islands instead of a single landmass. Finally, the game was said to feature a ‘mana’ system which would see player actions physically impact the environment around them.

While not the best game in the world, Immortals: Fenyx Rising was a fun time and offered enough of a unique spin on common formulas to make for an entertaining time. It is a shame to see that we will not see these ideas built upon.
