Intel still a long way to go, says ARM vice president

Intel may dominate the desktop market right now, but in the handset sector they haven't been able to take control. Noel Hurley, vice president for Marketing & Strategy in the Processor Division within ARM spoke out. He said that Intel still have a long way to go to catch up with ARM in terms of power consumption.

It is no secret that Intel are still struggling to reduce power consumption with their mobile processor releases. Hurley said that if you compare the market shares of handsets and tablet PC equipped with ARM processors and models with Intel processors then it shows that ARM are still significantly ahead.

Hurley added that Intel's rival is not ARM, but the ‘powerful ARM army' of companies such as Texas Instruments, MediaTek, Nvidia and Qualcomm. He said that Intel's advantage is only in funding. Basically, they are able to throw a lot of money at the problem in the efforts to resolve it.

The Intel Atom Z2460 is a powerful performance mobile chip, which can beat the ARM models, however it is significantly inferior when factoring in service life and power management. ARM processors can consume less than a single watt of power.
