Amazon unveils three new Kindle Fire tablets

Amazon has today announced three new Kindle Fire tablets. The flagship of the series will be the Fire HD 8.9″, there is also the Fire HD 7″ and a refresh of the original Kindle Fire.

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ has a very impressive 8.9 inch 1080p IPS display in a package weighing 567 grams. It is powered by a 1.5 GHz TI OMAP 4470 dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM. The tablet runs on a modified version of Android 4.0 and is sadly ad supported.

There will be both Wi-Fi only and LTE versions available, starting from $299 and $499 respectively. [yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrgO8Zseh6E']

Stepping down to the smaller form factor sits the Kindle Fire HD 7″ which has a  1280×800 IPS display. It has a lower clocked 1.2 GHz TI OMAP 4460 dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM. The 10.3mm frame weighs 395 grams and includes dual-band Wi-Fi.

The Kindle Fire HD 7″ will be available in 16 and 32 GB models for $199 and $249 respectively.

Lastly, there is a slightly refreshed Kindle Fire. It has the same 7 inch, 1024×600 resolution IPS display of its predecessor. The 1.2 GHz TI OMAP 4430 dual-core processor is combined with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage. Amazon's Kindle Fire will retail for $159.

The three tablets all run off a Android 4.0 base and include some neat features such as Whispersync. This allows for automatic syncing of game files and even allows for the syncing of where you are in an ebook with an audio book. There is also X-Ray, where tapping an actor in a movie will bring up their IMDb page. An application called FreeTime will also help parents restrict how much time their children spend on the device.

All three tablets will start to ship over the coming months.

KitGuru says: These tablets will be sure to give the Nexus 7 and any iPad mini a run for their money – at least where Amazon chooses to retail them.
