Apple sell over 2 million iPhone 5’s in 24 hours

We all knew it would happen, but the Apple hype machine has ensured record sales of the iPhone 5, across a 24 hour time period. The new smartphone has doubled the sales of its predecessor in the first day.

Apple are currently offering the 16Gb model for $199, 32GB for $299 and 64GB model for $399.

If you are in the UK, you can buy an unlocked iPhone 5, with prices starting at £529. Sales start in retailers from 21st september. Thats going to be a busy store day for the Apple team.

The company said yesterday that most orders in America will be delivered on Friday, but demand exceeds the initial supply. Some of the phones won't be delivered until October. The record sales figures pushed the company stock value 1.2 percent higher, to close at $699.78 yesterday.

The iPhone 5 will be available at Apple's 356 US stores on Friday. Every customer who buys the device at a retail store will be offered a free personal setup service, to help the user ‘customise' their device.

It will be made available in more than 22 countries on September 28th.

The iPhone 5 is the first major revision of the smartphone since it was launched in 2007. There is a new elongated screen, measuring 4 inches diagonally. Another row of icons can fit and it is a better shape for watching movies. The calendar for instance will now show 5 days at a time, not 3. The new smartphone is lighter and thinner  than the previous models and features the latest operating system from Apple.
