iPhone 5 benchmarks appear online: is it a monster?

The Apple hype machine is rolling across our landscape and information has been published by GeekBench which shows the iPhone 5 A6 processor is a performance monster. Whether they are completely accurate or not, remains to be seen.

The results published show a score of 1,601 points, which hammers the dual core A5 and A5X processors in the iPhone 4S and 3rd generation iPad, respectively.

The benchmarks of the Retina iPad show a score of 794. The iPhone 4S posted a score of 631.

Apple has said that the A6 chip is noticeably faster than previous version of the product “With the new A6 chip, just about everything you do on iPhone 5 is noticeably faster — up to twice as fast compared with the A5 chip.”

Geekbench are pointing to a 1GHZ clock speed, which is a 200mhz increase from the A5's 800mhz. Clearly some of the performance is due to the new design, which is handling more instructions per cycle, rather than just a minor core clock increase.

The A6 chip is said to be the first Apple processor built on Samsung's new 32 nanometer manufacturing process. The A6 also works with faster memory, which would help improve performance further.

If the results are accurate then the A6 is ahead of Android device benchmarks. The Samsung Galaxy S III which features the Exynos 4412 quad core chip at 1.4ghz, scored 1588 points.
