Apple to charge $29 for iPhone 5 adapter

The iPhone 5 looks set to drive record sales for Apple this year and next. The new model will be the thinnest and lightest model, completely redesigned to house a 4 inch retina display. Inside is the new Apple designed A6 chip alongside fast wireless technology. Apple have introduced the new ‘Lightning connector', the first change in connector since the device was launched. First, let us take a quick look at the new iPhone.

The iPhone 5 will ship with iOS 6, featuring a raft of new features including updated MAPS with Apple designed cartography and turn by turn navigation. V5 of the phone will have a new 7.6mm anodised aluminum body, which is 18% thinner and 20% lighter and the 4S.

The 4 inch Retina display on the iPhone 5 has more pixels than the previous version. The screen is taller and designed for ease of use with a higher quality screen for media viewing.

The new A6 processor has been designed by Apple to help improve performance while helping power efficiency, a concern when powering the larger retina display. They have also adopted a new 8MP iSight camera which is 25% smaller than the model in the 4S. They are using a new super durable glass to protect it.

There is also a new panorama feature to capture images up to 28 megapixels in size, by moving the camera in a motion. New video stabilisation and face detection should help improve quality. The system can also take a still picture while filming video. They have included a front mounted FaceTime camera to support video chat.

The iPhone 5 introduces a new enhanced audio system which includes ‘a beam-forming, directional microphone system for higher quality sound, while background noise fades away with new noise canceling technology.'

Apple have also adopted a new Lightning connector, which is smaller than the previous version. Apple are planning to charge $29 for an adapter to connect the iPhone 5 to other, older accessories.

This means if you want to use non Lightning connection devices, then you have to pay extra. So far this isn't proving too popular with the consumer. The older connector has been the standard since the device was launched in 2007.
