Today Ebay showed off its newly designed logo, though it has yet to go live on either the .com or .co.uk domains. It looks sharp and sleek and all the letters are lined up correctly now – though similar to Microsoft's redesign, I can't help but wonder how much the auction firm spent on consultation.
Debuting it on the company's announcement blog, Ebay's president Devin Wenig waxed lyrical for a good 10 paragraphs about how the new logo represents where the auction firm has been and where it's going, saying quite poetically that: “Our refreshed logo is rooted in our proud history and reflects a dynamic future.” Describing the new logo as maintaining the traditional vibrant colour palette, but that with a clean, crisp design it represented: “shopping anytime, anywhere? That is the new eBay.”
Wenig also described how Ebay had evolved from a place where people could buy a “broken laser pointer,” into a platform where people buy antiques and artifacts as well as brand new items from legitemate online retailers, but that ultimately the site was doing what it had done since it was created in 1995: “connecting buyers with sellers.”
Once one of the world's most recognised sites, it's interesting that Mr Wenig puts into words that the site sports around 100 million active users – a paltry number compared to Facebook's behemoth near billion worldwide.
