Foxconn employed 14 year old schoolchildren

Foxconn Technology Group said they found that interns as young as 14 years old had worked at a facility in Yantai in China.

A company investigation located the underage staff, who ranged in ages 14-16. They worked at the campus for three weeks, according to an emailed response send to Bloomberg News. They said a ‘small number' of interns sent by schools were underage.

Apple will be releaved to hear that the Yantai factory has no association with any work Foxconn handle for them. The underage interns are the latest in a series of labour problems Foxconn have faced over the last couple of years. There have been riots, suicides and strikes at Foxconn facilities in China where the company employs more than 1 million workers.

Foxconn said in a statement “Any Foxconn employee found, through our investigation, to be responsible for these violations will have their employment immediately terminated. We recognize that full responsibility for these violations rests with our company and we have apologized to each of the students for our role in this action.”

The China Labor Watch said that the schools who sent the underage interns are primarily responsible for their actions. Foxconn sent them back to the schools as soon as they confirmed their ages.

Foxconn have hired more than 300,000 people in China, since 2010.
