Android to be more common than Windows by 2016

On the same day as Windows 8 official launch, a research study by Gartner reveals that Google's mobile platform Android will be seen on more computer systems than Microsoft's Windows by 2016.

This army could be 2.3 billion strong by 2016.

As the world slowly shifts to mobile platforms Android will undoubtedly become ever popular. The study expects that in 2016 there will be 2.3 billion computers, tablets and smartphones running Android compared to 2.28 billion Windows devices.

In early September Google CEO Eric Schmidt mentioned that 1.3 million Android devices are activated daily. On the other hand personal computer shipments dropped as much as 8% in the third quarter; one of only a few declines since 2001.

Microsoft is currently fighting to stay relevant as the world shifts to smartphones and to date Windows tablets and smartphones have not been all that popular. Undoubtedly the technology giant are putting a lot of faith in Windows RT and Windows Phone 8 to stay relevant over the coming years.

KitGuru says: There may be two phones for every computer in today's households, so as Android grows this is easily a plausible study.
