Microsoft joins Apple as critics of 7 inch tablets

Steve Jobs is well known for completely disregarding the 7 inch tablet form factor in the past. Jobs was quote as saying that “7-inch tablets are tweeners: too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with the iPad. 7-Inch tablets are dead on arrival.”

Don't expect to see a 7 inch model any time soon.

Now, it appears that Microsoft is also a critic of the smaller tablet form factor. During a recent interview Windows Group CFO, Tami Reller was asked about its intentions in the tablet marketplace. Her reply is that Microsoft and its partners are focussing on 10 inch tablets. When questioned if that meant that there are no current plans for 7 inch tablets, Reller's reply was “correct”.

With Windows 8 and RT designed with a more productive user experience in mind the 7 inch form factor just doesn't make too much sense. This is especially the case if you imagine a Microsoft Surface Touch Cover equivalent. Although smaller tablets could be cheaper and offer greater portability and e-reading abilities, there is already hundreds of great and not-so-great Android tablets occupying that marketplace.

KitGuru says: 7 inch Windows tablets don't make sense to Microsoft, or to us.
