Toyota forced to recall 2.77m cars with steering flaw

Toyota have said they will recall 2.77 million cars worldwide, after they have detected faults in the steering and water pump systems in some of their petrol and hybrid models.

A total of 14 models are affected by the problem, including the Corolla compact sedan and the Prius Hybrid. The cars will be inspected and repaired. They have to recall 1.52 million cars in Japan and 1.25 million worldwide. 670,000 Prius cars are affected in America. The company issued statements on their websites today.

Toyota are facing another embarrassment as they try to rebuild their reputation for quality control. They called back 10 million cars in 2009 and 2010 for defects which were associated with potential increased acceleration. Last month they also encountered a problem over a potential fire hazard – forcing the recall of 7.43 million cars.

Toyota said they haven't received any reports of crashes or injuries due to these faults. Repairs should take less than 3 hours in total for the steering shaft and pump replacement.

Kitguru says: Hopefully the last for Toyota this year.
