PS5 game streaming preview goes live

Back in June of this year Sony announced that they would soon allow for PS Plus Premium subscribers to stream PlayStation 5 games – similar to what Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members can do. Ahead of its official launch, the PS5 streaming preview has gone live, letting you play games at up to 2160p.

As reported by ResetEra user ‘ArashiGames’ Sony has begun to send out email invites to PS Plus Premium subscribers, offering them the opportunity to try out PS5 game streaming ahead of everyone else.

After downloading the beta firmware, subscribers are able to play a number of PS5 streaming capable games, with the early list so far including:

  • God of War Ragnarok
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Fortnite
  • Fall Guys
  • Destiny 2
  • Returnal
  • Demon's Souls
  • Death Stranding
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure
  • Destruction All Stars
  • Demon Slayer
  • Resident Evil Village

Interestingly, players are seemingly able to stream titles at up to 4K quality, with the options available being 720p, 1080p, 1440p and of course 2160p. Additionally, any saved data you have for the games seem to load up automatically, making for a seamless experience and should allow for an easy back-and-forth between streamed and downloaded games.

Of course, being limited to streaming on the console itself is somewhat disappointing – especially as players could simply download these games for a likely higher quality experience. That said, this new feature serves as an excellent base for Sony to then hopefully expand outwards into other platforms – namely PC and mobile streaming. We will have to wait and see, but this seems like a good start for the service.
