Final Fantasy 16 didn’t meet ‘high-end’ sales expectations

Just a couple of weeks ago, Square Enix issued a statement saying that Final Fantasy 16 launch sales were “extremely strong” after reports that sales took a nosedive in Japan just one week from release. Now, as part of the publisher's latest earnings report, the company has stated that the game didn't meet expectations after all. 

A number of analysts were on the Square Enix earnings call on Friday evening. After the call, some analysts told Bloomberg that Square Enix's President had stated that Final Fantasy 16 “did not meet the high end of the company's expectations”, but that presumably means that the game did fall in an acceptable area.

Square Enix is known for having lofty sales expectations and often states that popular titles have underdelivered. In this case though, Square Enix is primarily chalking things up to slow adoption of the PS5 console. Right now, Final Fantasy 16 is a PS5 exclusive, granting access to a much smaller user base compared to the PS4. Eventually, the game will be releasing on PC, but not until sometime in 2024 at the earliest.

While sales may have slowed for Final Fantasy 16, the game should continue to sell pretty well, especially in a few months time when the first sales season discounts start to kick in.
