Embracer Group shuts down Volition, the studio behind Red Faction and Saints Row

Embracer Group has announced plans to shut down Volition Games, the studio behind Saints Row. The company had been around for 30 years but following a big miss with the Saints Row reboot, Embracer is pulling the plug.

Volition has gone through plenty of changes over the years. In the 90s, the company developed the Freespace series, before moving on to Red Faction in the 2000s. By 2006, the studio had its own GTA rival in the form of Saints Row, which managed to garner plenty of popularity over the 360/PS3 generation. A Saints Row reboot launched last year but was critically panned and also appeared to be a commercial flop.

In a message posted to the studio's website, Volition confirms it is shutting down as part of a restructuring within Embracer Group. The company has spent a lot of money on acquisitions in recent years but has had few hits to show for it. Unfortunately, this leads to a situation like this, where a storied studio with lots of history has to shut its doors.

Those working at Volition will get assistance in finding new job opportunities, so we have our fingers crossed that everyone lands on their feet.

KitGuru Says: Saints Row 1-4 and the Red Faction games were favourites of mine back in the day so this is sad news to see.
