Following the 20th anniversary of the SMS message, the age old service is under threat from services such as WhatsApp, Kik Messenger and now Facebook. A recent update to the Android application, that is currently available only to select countries, allows users to use Facebook Messenger with nothing more than a number and name.
Currently the option to do this is only available to those in India, Australia, Indonesia, Venezuela, and South Africa. Facebook also says that it hopes to expand this list as much as possible soon.
Facebook recently updated its Messenger application to incorporate SMS messaging as well and seemingly wants to become the one stop shop for smartphone messaging.
A similar update to the iOS application will arrive in the future but no time frame has been given at this stage.
KitGuru says: Facebook Messenger wants to become your one and only messaging and texting application, will you let it?
