Dell retires from the smartphone arena, without really being in it

Dell has never been overly active or popular in the smartphone arena. Their only modern day attempts have been the Android powered Streak series and the Venue Pro Windows Phone 7.x device. None of these devices ever gained traction in the highly competitive smartphone market.

At the recent Dell World conference, Dell's head of consumer business, Jeff Clarke has said that smartphones require “a lot of investments to really be successful” and as such the company has lost interest in the heavily contested and even bloated market. Instead Dell will focus on Microsoft's platforms. This will include Windows 8 PCs and Windows RT tablets.

However, Android tablets could also be a possibility as Clarke said that we “should come and see what’s in [Dell's] labs.” While that will never physically happen; it is apparent that Dell is no longer concerned for smartphones.

KitGuru says: A smartphone world without Dell really isn't a big loss.
