As someone who has been working retail as a Summer job, you might just be surprised how much of a demand there is for senior friendly handsets of any kind. The ones I have run into have been your standard cheap candy bar with big buttons. Fortunately, reports suggest Fujitsu will bring their senior friendly Android smartphone to the larger European and North American markets.
The Raku Raku senior friendly handset has been available in Japan for a few months now and this availability expansion could boost their shipment numbers from 8 million in 2012 to an estimated 10 million in 2014.
The handset itself runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as a base and Fujitsu has modified it to include larger fonts and limited the homescreen to just a few basic applications such as phone, messaging and contacts. There is also a voice slowing feature that makes it easier to understand.
It is not yet clear when the phones will arrive on closer shores but KitGuru's bet would be on the first half of 2013.
KitGuru says: An Android smartphone made for the elderly is bound to be a strong seller.
