Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer speaks out about Maps problems

Yahoo's CEO Marissa Mayer has spoken out publicly for the first time since taking over the company. She is one of the most powerful women in the industry and her views are always heard worldwide.

Jon Fortt reported on her speech saying “No bombshells from Mayer, but she did talk about what Yahoo will, and won't do, and her own personal priorities. Yahoo has been getting locked out of the mobile app space. Mail is one of Yahoo's most important web franchises, but id doesn't translate on smartphones where most people use a native app for email.”

Fortt adds “One area Mayer said she will not touch is Maps.”

Mayer said “I've done maps in my former life. Its very expensive, very hard to do well. Apple is finding that out. So we're not going to do maps, right?”

  1. Yahoo should touch the Maps.

It is actually not that expensive. Considering this is a long term investment, Yahoo can narrow down its business scope on Maps.

Yahoo Map is not Google Map. It is not necessary to be a precise direction for a person to find out a destination. What I believe, Yahoo could do something for consumers.

It could compile data from all its sponsors and provide maps for all of their locations. Simply, I can use Yahoo map to find my favorite coffee shop, and meanwhile, Yahoo would be able to accumulate the geographic information of its sponsors. Such valuable development experience provides two things: it favors its sponsors and build up a data warehouse for all of the consumers.

A Map is not just about giving directions. A map offers evidence and the history of the dynamic business. All the footprints will be saved into Yahoo’s unique consumers data warehouse.
