Qualcomm outs Snapdragon 600 and 800 SoCs

Qualcomm's system on chip solutions today find themselves at home in literally thousands of different products and in 2013 Qualcomm are looking to further establish their position. For 2013 Qualcomm is introducing new branding for its Snapdragon range. The new family consists of the Snapdragon 800, Snapdragon 600, Snapdragon 400 and Snapdragon 200 chipsets.

The former two categories are the ones to look out for in high-end mobile devices. The Snapdragon 600 will continue where the S4 Pro left off in today's flagship smartphones and tablets such as HTC's Butterfly. Qualcomm is claiming a 40 percent speed bump over last generation system on chip solutions of Snapdragon 600. This will achieved with the quad-core Krait processor, the Adreno 320 receiving clock speed increases and the presence of LPDDR3 memory. The first Snapdragon 600 products will start shipping by Q2 2013.

The Snapdragon 800 is where the performance is, promising a 75 percent CPU performance increase over current S4 Pro processors and double the graphics compute performance. Krait 400 CPU cores will run at up to 2.3 GHz and offer best-in-class performance per watt. Four of these cores will meet together in unison with the Adreno 330 GPU. LPDDR3 memory will be present to offer greater bandwidth for high resolution displays. Connectivity wise, Snapdragon 800 will be home to integrated 4G LTE (Category 4 for greater speeds), 802.11ac Wi-Fi, USB 3.0, and QFHD video recording. Devices with Snapdragon inside will start to arrive this Summer.

Both chipset families will be manufacturers on a 28nm HPm (High Performance for mobile) process for great efficiency over their current 28nm process for Qualcomm S4 Pro chipsets.

KitGuru says: With a fully integrated solution we expect Qualcomm to extend their control of the mobile SoC market.
