Hennessey Venom GT breaks production car acceleration record

Hennessey Performance Engineering, a well known American tuning house have managed to break a world record. Their Hennessey Venom GT car has set a new Guinness World Record for the ‘world's fastest accelerating production car'.

The car had to complete two runs in opposite directions within one hour of each other that averaged out to a time of 13.63 seconds to go from 0-186.4 mph (300km/h).

The event was held at the 8,000 foot long runway at Ellington Airport on January 10th 2013. The first run had a supporting backwind of 6 km/h and the supercar accelerated from 0-300km/h in 13.18 seconds. The second run had a 10 km/h headwind which slowed the time to 14.08 seconds to hit the same speed.

The average of 13.63 seconds was able to claim the world record from the Koenigsegg Agera which recorded a 14.53 second time.

The monster Hennessey Venom GT is powered by a 7.0 liter V8 which produces 1,244 horse power and 1,155 lb-ft of torque. The car is also street legal and weighs only 1,244kg, delivering a ratio of one horsepower per kilogram of weight. [yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s1eBox1i-0′]

For comparison, the Buggati Veyron Super Sport takes 22.2 seconds to hit the 200 mph mark.

Hennessy plan on building only 29 Venom GT cars and one third of them are already sold to rich punters. The price? A cool $1.2 million.
