PS4 will be cheaper at launch than PS3

The PlayStation 4 is set to be shown off for the first time tomorrow and already fresh rumours are appearing. The latest one is suggesting that it could launch at a lower price point than the PS3 did – as low as £300.

This report comes from the Times, which is citing an actual UK price and not a simple Japanese or US price conversion – as when that occurs, the price usually comes out less since we pay more here for everything. Apart from Yorkshire tea.

“Industry sources and leaked internal documents suggest that Sony is considering pricing the new device at about £300, more than £100 cheaper than the starting cost of its predecessor, the PlayStation 3,” it claims.

Orbis
PS4, Orbis, no one is quite sure what the next console will be called either.

This would be a good move for Sony if it could pull it off, since one of the reasons the PS3 has such a slow initial uptake was because it was so expensive. Of course the delay in its release behind that of both the Xbox 360 and Wii didn't help either, but releasing late at a high price point is a sure way to hamper adoption. With a more competitive price and a more on-time release, Sony is much more likely to succeed.

KitGuru Says: Tomorrow should be an interesting day. We're unlikely to get hard release date or pricing information from Sony, but we'll get our first look at the console and perhaps have some hints at the rumoured internal hardware. It's also likely that we'll hear something in the way of a launch lineup and any plans for price drops on current-gen hardware.
