Sony are launching a new high end tablet set to target the crowded market. The tablet has been announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today and it delivers market leading features, including ultra high screen resolution, camera quality and connectivity.
It will also be waterproof, following the same design concept as the Xperia Z smartphone last month.
The Tablet Z is just 6.9mm thick and Sony claim it is the thinnest 10.1 tablet on the market and weighs just 500g.
Sony have went through an extensive research process and they claim that 80 percent of the time, the tablet will be used indoors at home and they have capitalised on this by ensuring it can interact with other Sony home appliances. There is a built in remote control for instance meaning you can control a wealth of Sony devices, without having to hunt for other remotes. Users can also move content around the tablet to the TV, by simply touching the devices together.
Sony say their tablet will not be as expensive as the Microsoft Surface Pro although they have yet to detail any pricing in the UK or US.
The Xperia Z tablet uses Google's Android operating system and will launch in Japan this week, with other countries following in the second quarter.
Kaz Tajima, vice president at Sony Mobile, said “Xperia Tablet Z reinforces our intention to be a leading player in the premium Android device market by building on the principles established by Xperia Z.”
It is the first tablet to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon quad core processor.
Kitguru says: On paper it looks fantastic, but this market is so competitive it may be difficult for Sony to grab marketshare.
