We've covered The War Z a few times here at KitGuru, with its lying ways, apologies from major players at the company – which disturbingly still doesn't have its own website – and eventual removal from Steam for not offering a satisfactory build. Now though, it's been allowed back and you can once again pay money for one of the most hated games of recent years.
To avoid the problems it had before – notably the fact that it lied about content that was in the game – the developer Hammerpoint, has this time restricted its Steam store page feature list to things that are actually in the game, though they now sound completely generic:
- Two modes of Play: Normal and Hardcore
- Combination of First-Person and Third Person Perspectives
- Meld of PVE (Player versus Environment) and PVP (Player versus Player)
- Safe Settlements where Players can access their global inventory
- Create your own Clans
- Reputation system – Choose to become a lawman or bandit
- Leave Messages for friends in the game world with a time capsule
- Immersive environment with unique and spine chilling sound effects
- Huge variation of melee and firearm weapon types
However one user on the Steam forums reputes most of these claims, suggesting there is in fact only one mdre of play, very little persistence, no survival challenge, no access to inventory from safe settlements, sound effects that include never ending crickets and random player bans.
The game still retains a 23/100 rating on metacritic, as well as slews of hateful comments if you search for forums discussing the game. Many players are still claiming that the free servers are dominated by hackers and cheaters, forcing anyone that wants to play without such tricks into paying for a private server.
Of course if you find yourself dying quite often in the game, you'll need to pay for respawns thanks to the game's inbuilt micro-transaction system. Yes that's on top of the minimum £11 you'll need to spend to get the game in the first place.
KitGuru Says: While I can't comment on much of the hate having not played this game myself – thank god I'm not a game reviewer – there are a lot of naff games on Steam, no reason this one shouldn't join them as long as players know what they're getting into.
Unfortunately I bought it from hammerpoint before it went to steam. The game is so flawed it is ridiculous. I bought into the hype they were giving it, and I have to agree there is NOTHING new in it. Imagine this…
I start out, I have nothing to defend myself with….Oh I’m dead I’ve been shot by another player who is now rifling through my non-existant belongings…..
Try again….oh no I have to create a new player or BUY a respawn…. new player it is then…. off we go…… a safe settlement fab, but ohh no there is NOTHING there no weapons nothing…..ok must be something nearby…..ah yes a horde of zombies….. I shall run away……oh I’ve been shot again……..
